TN New CM MK Stalin Begins First Innings: Free Covid19 Treatment At Private Hospitals

Soon after taking oath as Tamil Nadu's new chief minister, MK Stalin on Friday announced a slew of measures to tackle the prevailing Covid-19 situation in the state. These measures ranged from announcing direct cash support, free treatment for Covid-19 at private hospitals, to free bus travel for women and a cut in price of milk.

Here are 5 key announcements MK Stalin made on his first day in office:

Direct cash benefit of Rs 4,000
Chief Minister MK Stalin announced a direct cash relief for the people to mitigate losses suffered during the pandemic. The government has announced it will provide Rs 4,000 to each ration cardholder to help them with their livelihood.

First installment of Rs 2,000 per ration cardholder will be given in May.

"The chief minister has signed the order to provide the first installment of Rs 2,000 in May itself at Rs 4,153.69 crore, covering 2,07,67,000 ration cardholders," the government said in a statement.

Free treatment for Covid-19 at private hospitals
Chief Minister MK Stalin also announced that treatment for Covid-19 at private hospital will now be covered under a government insurance scheme to help people.

The treatment charges will be borne by the state government under the chief minister comprehensive insurance scheme for Covid-19.

It will cover charges of all Covid-19 related treatments of state government insurance cardholders in the empanelled private hospitals.

Aavin mil rate reduced
The government has announced a cut in the price of Aavin milk that is distributed in the state.

The price of milk supplied by state-run Aavin has been reduced by Rs 3. The new price will be effective from May 16.

Free travel for women in state-run buses
Recalling the DMK's poll promise, MK Stalin announced free travel for women in sate-run buses in Tamil Nadu.

As per the order, women can travel free of cost in all ordinary fare city buses operated by the state transport corporation from Saturday onwards.

The government has allocated a sum of Rs 1,200 crore as subsidy for this purpose.

CM Cell to address grievances
On his first day in office, MK Stalin also approved constituting an IAS officer headed department to implement the 'Chief Minister in Your Constituency' scheme.

In the run-up to election, he had promised to redress people's issues within 100 days of taking over, on petitions received by him as the DMK chief.

He had then promised to solve the issues within 100 days of taking over as chief minister of the state.
