US Elections 2020: Democrat Joe Biden Becomes 46th President By Defeating Donald Trump
As per the Associated Press tally, Democrat Joe Biden defeated President Donald Trump and is expected to become the 46th President of the United States on Saturday, positioning himself to lead a nation gripped by a historical pandemic and a confluence of economic and social turmoil. After more than three days of uncertainty, his victory came as election officials sorted through a surge of mail-in votes that delayed some ballots being processed. Biden won 270 votes in the Electoral College with a victory in Pennsylvania and total of 290 Electoral College Votes.
Biden, 77, staked his candidacy less on any distinctive political philosophy than on galvanising the notion that Trump posed an existential threat to American democracy to a large coalition of voters. In Michigan and Wisconsin as well as Pennsylvania, once Democratic bastions that had flipped to Trump in 2016, the strategy proved successful, resulting in pivotal victories. The high stakes election was held on November 3 against the backdrop of an unprecedented pandemic that has killed more than 2,30,000 Americans and wiped away millions of jobs.
