The Fall Of BJP-Saffron Map Shrinks Further

In a span of an year, BJP has lost power in five key states. This is a strong reason to worry for Modi-Shah duo. After losing Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh states to Congress and allies in 2018 Assembly polls, BJP scored a historic win in Lok Sabha polls held in 2019. However, the joy didn't last long.

Though BJP emerged as the single largest party in Maharashtra, it had failed to form the government in the state due to differences between BJP-Shiv Sena alliance over power sharing. BJP was singled out. This eventually helped Congress, NCP and Shiv Sena to form a post-poll alliance and form the government. Opposition parties did much better than expected in Haryana and Maharashtra. BJP witnessed a steady decline since 2018 when it lost its bastions of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh besides Rajasthan.

Now, Jharkhand has joined the legion of the states that are  slipping out of BJP's rule – Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and Maharashtra that are lost to Congress and allies. BJP received a huge set back with the Assembly election result of Jharkhand. While JMM – Congress combine won 46 seats out of 81 Assembly seats, BJP which contested alone won in 25 seats, whereas JVM(P) won 3 seats, AJSUP won 2 seats and RJD won 1 seat.

With this, the BJP footprint has shrunk to half from the Lotus party's 2017 peak. BJP now governs mere 35% of the country's landmass in comparison to over 71% during its peak in 2017.  Whereas, in terms of the percentage of population being governed in the states,  BJP, either on its own or with its allies, now stands at around 43% from over 69% two years back. This is high time, Modi-Shah to rethink of their poll and political strategy in the states.
